One Shot Wonder: A Real YouTube Hit Video

In June 2015 Teton Gravity Research (TGR), with the help of Anthill Films, released the highly anticipated mountain bike film unReal. The film got a lot of love, however there’s one part that just stands out above the rest. The video in question is ‘One Shot: Brandon Semenuk’s unReal Segment’, which is being touted as one of the most acclaimed segments around. Brendon Semenuk is undoubtedly one of the best slopestyle mountain bikers in the world, and with the help of the video production team, he managed to be the first mountain biker to film a full segment in one continuous shot.

Planning

Working in video production you really start to appreciate the time and effort it takes to get that one special shot. In the case of this video, that one special shot just happened to be 4 minutes long. The planning that went into this shot is just unbelievable, the team spent a month building the track alone. On top of the track for Brandon to ride, the team also had to build a track for the car which would have a GSS mounted in the bed of the truck. Once the track was built, the pre-production didn’t stop there. Imagine spending 10 days practicing 1 shot to make sure you got it right. That’s what Brandon and the team at TGR and Anthill Films went through.

Filming

There’s a few variables when filming one continuous shot. This video production is no exception. You have the driver, the camera operator, the focus puller, timing and positioning manager and then of course, the rider. If one variable messes up, the team head back up the hill and start again until they get it right. There’s so much pressure on each individual to perform.

The film itself has had some raving reviews, but I think this one segment is the real talking point. The video’s had over 2.3m hits on YouTube alone. But for me I think it’s the time and effort that has gone into the production that makes this video one of my favourites of the year so far.

Behind The Scenes

All great videos should be accompanied by a behind the scenes video, and the production team haven’t disappointed. Check out a small glimpse of what went into making this unreal edit.
