Is This The End For PCs?
It is thought that the ‘death of the notebook’ has made a large contribution to the slump, as consumers fill the gap in the low-end PC market with tablets and smart phones. Analyst IDC have said that Microsoft’s latest operating system is also to blame, “The Windows 8 launch not only failed to provide a positive boost to the PC market, but appears to have slowed the market”. The Guardian reported that “Microsoft has been struggling to adapt to the new computing landscape since Apple upended the low-end market with the release of its iPad tablet in April 2010”.
The use of mobile devices has boomed, especially since the launch of the iPad. Tim Cook stated last year that 67 million iPads were sold in the first quarter of 2012, and it took 24 years to sell that many Macs, 5 years for that many iPods and over 3 years for that many iPhones.
Although this new data may not mean a halt in the use of PCs altogether, it certainly shows how many people are now relying on their mobile devices.
